Well, the way we produce our paddles depends on a number of things. And the way in which we produce our paddles has even changed quite a bit since we began in 2003. We can give you a bit of history on that below when we get some time (some other time).

But, currently, the simple answer for 'most' of our paddles is:

  1. We digitally print to full sheets of plastic using a very large digital flatbed inkjet printer. Sheets of plastic are 4'x 8' and 5'x 8' in size. One of the printers we currently use is an Fujifilm Advance Select X2 double-wide flatbed printer. It is a HUGE piece of equipment and weighs about 5,000 lbs. It can print substrates that are up to 10'x 10' in size. I think NEW it was about a $350,000 piece of equipment. Yikes!

  2. Once we have printed the numbers, graphics, photos, images or whatever is called for, we take the sheet of printed plastic over to our flatbed digital cutter. It is on this piece of equipment that we then cut out the paddles into the particular-shaped paddles. Again, this is a very large piece of equipment that cuts out shapes from a single piece of material (and not just plastics) up to 5' x 10' in size. Our current machine is a swiss-made Zund G3-XL1600 flatbed cutter; the best built finishing machine in it's class! The machine has multiple tool heads used to knife-cut and router-cut our paddle shapes.

Now, beyond the various 'sheet' plastics we use, we also have a line of very rigid, sturdy, 'permanent' paddles that are actually manufactured by way of injection molding. The are formed, just like many other plastic objects we use in everyday life. Pellets of plastic resin (HIPS or high-impact polystyrene) are melted and injected into a pre-made steel mold. We currently have 3 paddle shapes (2 ovals and 1 square) that we mold, in White and in various colors too.

We make our paddles from several different reusable plastics. BTW, 3mm (millimeters)= about 1/8"

These are our usual materials:

• BasicPRO model - 2mm Cartonplast (brand)--- Polypropylene, knife cut: <-- This plastic material is designed and made by Better Bidders- its our own stuff!
• ValuePRO model - 3.5mm Cartonplast (brand)--- Polypropylene, routed: <-- This plastic material is designed and made by Better Bidders- its our own stuff!
• PremiumPRO3, PremiumPRO4, PremiumPRO6 models - 3mm, 4mm, 6mm thick Sintra & Komatex (brand) PVC--- Expanded PVC, routed
• PlatinumPRO - "Permanent" paddles--- HIPS [high impact polystyrene], injection molded

We have also made paddles out of polycarbonate and acrylic. We don't make paper fans on a stick.

Well, it depends. (What other answer were you really expecting)

How long our paddles will last depends on several factors. Most of our customer use their paddles 1-3 times per year. Many only use them once a year. For ANY of our paddle materials, if treated properly, we expect years of use and re-use.

We designed the BasicPRO to be the least-expensive "decent" paddle in the marketplace, and that remains truly reusable; not because it is plastic, but because of how we've designed the material to have flex. They don't just 'fold' and break like crappy 4mm Coroplast corrugated plastic does (Coroplast brand is the standard out there for yard signs and is used by some to fashion paddles, but they suck and are NOT truly reusable in our opinion).

Our ValuePRO paddles we consider to be our best value (appropriately). Made of the same material as the 2mm version, the 3.5mm has about 2x the amount of plastic as the 2mm stuff. Which makes them VERY RIGID and incredibly difficult to break or fold, even using 2 hands! We have customers ordering fill-in numbers that purchased their 3.5mm Cartonplast more than 10 years ago. We like to say that "you'll lose then before you break them". And given they don't cost all that much more than the 2mm version we make, we think this is our best solution if you want the best balance of lower cost but still very reusable. that the longevity of your paddles are most closely related to how much effort you put into getting them back. It is not unusual to lose ~10% of your paddles if you're not paying attention to recovering them right after the live auction.

The Cartonplast brand of polypropylene is a direct competitor to Coroplast. Where Coroplast has the dominant market share here in the US, Cartonplast seems to be dominant in Europe and the UK. ORBIS Corporation makes our material. When we first started out (2003) we thought we'd use the typical 4mm Coroplast plastic material for our basic paddles. But we soon came to see that, while they had rigidity, once the paddle was folded it didn't look so great and that it didn't resist pressure to well against the flutes. So we set about seeing if we could make something better; something that was more substantive with respect to the amount of plastic in the sheets (its weight/sq. foot), it's thickness, the spacing of the flutes, and anything else we might control in making our own sheet plastics. So what we designed were 2 version of our own custom Cartonplast sheets; what is now our BasicPRO and our ValuePRO materials. We made them:

1. 5x8' sheets in size (typically they would be 4x8') to improve our paddle yield/shape and make our production more efficient with lower costs.

2. We had the flutes that make up the structure of the sheets CLOSER together than Coroplast. This make a material that is stronger, bringing better value to our customers.

3. We made BasicPRO into a thinner 2mm thick profile to pack the same amount of, what would be 4mm Coroplast material by weight, into a sheet that has the same amount of material but is 1/2 as thick. Thick gives BasicPRO it's "flex" and again is stronger. Some people don't care for the "flex" but we have found positive results.

4. We made our ValuePRO by doubling the amount of material again as the BasicPRO. Then we packed that into a 3.5mm thick sheet profile. The result is a very rigid paddle with little ability to 'snap' along any of the flute lines; even using 2 hands one has to really work at 'breaking' it. When combined with having an ink-adhesion promoter wiped onto the sheets to give the printing more longevity, we guarantee you'll get 7 years out these paddles if you want to.

5. Finally, and this has been our pièce de résistance, we contracted with the manufacturer of our sheets to "WAVE" the flutes of our material slightly as it is being extruded into sheets. We call it "S-Flute". And we are the ONLY customer of theirs, IN THE WORLD,for whom they produce this. It is completely our proprietary design and exists nowhere other than with Better Bidders. The waving of the flutes gives our materials (in both our BasicPRO and ValuePRO) more added strength, and resistent flex, by taking away what would be the natural break line for corrugated plastic (as the flutes have always been designed in parallel).

Overall we think think we've got a unique value proposition to these particular materials.

We consider ALL of our plastic materials reusable. That said, some are certainly more reusable than others. To learn more about each material check out Our Materials. The least expensive BasicPRO would be our least and our PlatinumPRO our most reusable.

We operate essentially as a full-service sign shop. We print to all materials you can think of and can cut and route to-shape what you need. Posters, window-clings, digital wall murals, yard signs, POP standees and signage, magnetics, stickers/decals (think patron labels for your paddles- removable adhesive!), custom cutouts, wayfinding signs, site signs, step-and-repeats, banners of all sizes, heat-beat table tents, golf sponsor signs, and more. Our primary business is focused on auction paddles and special event signage.

Yes. All of the plastics we use are recyclable. Additionally, we donate all of our plastic scrap left over from fabrication and it gets repurposed in an environmentaly way.

"mm" is short for "millimeter". For whatever reason the plastics industry works often in millimeters. So our plastics are measured in millimeters (thick). BTW, 3mm = about 1/8"

No.

We make only plastic reusable paddle products for those serious about maximizing their live auction revenue. There is nothing serious or beneficial about cheap paper and wooden sticks.

Yes. If you absolutely must have wooden paddles we can fabricate those as well. We have just found that there are many advantages to plastic vis-a-vis wooden paddles and there very few organizations that actually use wooden paddles. Longer fabrication time and higher material cost are certainly reasons why they're rarely used. Weight is another.

Yes.

We can print anything to our paddles. We digitally print direct to the plastic surface for the best look and longevity. We can easily provide a number of 'looks' of having your logo(s) and graphic(s) on our paddles... and even before you might want to purchase. Just email us the graphics you are wanting to use and we'll send back some mockup .pdfs. When it comes to printing graphics we always want to get the best quality you have. "Vector" format is preferred (.ai, .eps, .pdf, .svg) but also higher-resolution .jpg, .gif, .png, .tiff (300 dpi is best). Web graphics usually don't work.

PMS matching isn't something we do, but our equipment is dialed-in so colors will be very very close.

No. Since we don't print in 'spot' colors like screenprinters do, and instead print digitally (4-color CMYK process), whether it's all color or just black [&]&[&] white it's all the same to us.

We print using several large-format UV-curable flatbed inkjet printers. All printing is done directly to the plastics we use. We also make use of Roland wide-format printers that utilize eco-solvent inks for high-resolution printing of banners, removable decals, contour-cut graphics and most of our 'soft' signage.

Yes. and Yes.

We have the ability to create any shape you like, and not just for use as paddles. We think we've gotten pretty good at it. Price depends on size, material used, and printing needed. It can also vary slightly depending on the shape's yield/sheet of plastic. Generally the more paddles we get from a sheet the lower the cost. Technically we can cut and print any shape that is up to 5' x 10' in size as a single piece. If you can imagine it we can probably produce it.

We are often asked if we can modify a shape just slightly to fit an organization's logo. We can do it an charge less than creating a shape from scratch. Our boombox shape comes to mind. While our original boombox is perfectly fine, a client asked if we could take their artwork for their event theme (which was a boombox) and make a shape that matched their artwork. No problem. So now we have 2 boomboxes other customers might choose to use.

Yes.

We use Helvetica Bold as our standard number font for our paddles. But you can have us use a different font if you like. The cost is usually $75-$100 on the order, and the cost is really for changing our layouts to accomodate the new font. If we don't have the font already, you can either provide it to us or we can charge you to purchase it at cost, quite often around $35 or so.

No, they don't have to have any printing on them. You can purchase just "blank" paddles if you wish. Also, you can have just your graphic(s) printed, without any numbers.

Well, honestly, just about any material. As long as it is relatively flat. Even unconventional materials and surfaces you might never think of as being printable. Like how about a door?

We use a Zund (brand) model 3XL-1600 digital flatbed cutter/router table. It has a 5' x 10' bed and can cut, drill, and route many materials into pieces of any size and shape.

Technically we do not do PMS matching. But because we have our equipment dialed-in our colors are VERY close.

Yes. We do full-bleed printing to our paddles. When printing full-bleed to our Cartonplast materials (BasicPRO, ValuePRO) there is usually an extra charge to prepare the plastic sheets with an ink adhesion promoter that makes the ink adhere better ($0.15 per padde per side). This is important when cutting or routing through the printed ink when cutting out the shape. For PVC materials we use there is no need for this so there is no extra charge. For the ValuePRO material we often recommend this (whether or not there is a bleed) as it can make a big difference in the paddles's longevity. For example, if you have us use the ink adhesion promoter on your paddles we'll guarantee the paddles' usefulness for 7 years. Again, the ink adhesion promoter is only used with the BasicPRO and ValuePRO materials.

you print?". We have all the high end equipment a sucessful sign shop would have. Wide-format printers, digital flatbed cutters, roll laminators and the like. So we produce not just plastic paddles but also all types of signage. Decals, stickers, posters, magnets, stretch canvas, banners, and site signs are just some of the items we produce.

It depends on their needs. Sometimes budget drives the decision and our BasicPRO line is the right option. When there are sponsors helping to defray the cost of the paddles and the customer really wants the paddles to last several years but they still have to be lower cost, they might go with our ValuePRO line. Because there are so many factors that go into what is the best solution we encourage you to check out our product comparison page that we believe will help you in deciding.
Keep in mind that ALL of our plastics are reusable to varying degrees at different price points. If you're still not sure give us a call to discuss. (We like getting calls)

While it is easy to say "it depends", we can say that in over 20 years of making paddles the majority of our customers begin their numbering sequence with "1". Probably 60%. Next popular is starting at 101. Probably 30%. And then there is everything inbetween. For example, some auction software our customers use may assign bid numbers in a funky way; like skip every "3" numbers or every "5" numbers. Whatever your sequence needed we'll do it. No extra cost for what looks like goofy numbering either. It's just a part of what we do.

Along those same lines, don't forget that we also

fill-in

any of those paddle numbers that might have gone missing. Sometime after your event (or before the next) simply take inventory of what paddle numbers are missing, put the list in Excel and shoot it over to us. We pull together an estimate for you (based pretty much on the same per-paddle price as your last order), and you can add onto your sequence as well. We do this with ALL of our paddles and materials. So DON'T throw our your paddles!!!

Well, nearly every customer of our is a non-profit organization. Because our customers ARE so cost-conscious we've been VERY slow to modify any of our prices over the years. In several instances our pricing NOW is less than it was 15 years ago. We keep removing cost from our production and procurement processes so we can continue to support our customers better. That said, we HAVE been known to throw an occassional 5% discount around from time to time. You know what they say, "If you don't ask you don't get". It is our normal procedure to take your credit card at time of order. Nothing is charged until we actually begin production on an order (after proof is provided) and usually when we ship your order. In cases of a rush order we will often charge your card a day or 2 earlier. You can also pay by check provided the check is received prior to our anticipated ship date. We don't take checks on rush orders.

How long our paddles will last depends on several factors. Most of our customer use their paddles 1-3 times per year. Many only use them once a year. For ANY of our paddle materials, if treated properly, we expect years of use and re-use.

We designed the 2mm Cartonplast paddles to be the least-expensive "decent" paddle in the marketplace, and that remains truly reusable; not because it is plastic, but because of how we've designed the material to have flex. They don't just 'fold' and break like crappy 4mm Coroplast corrugated plastic does (Coroplast brand is the standard out there for yard signs and is used by some to fashion paddles, but they suck and are NOT truly reusable in our opinion).

Our 3.5mm Cartonplast paddlespaddles we consider to be our best value. Made of the same material as the 2mm version, the 3.5mm has about 2x the amount of plastic as the 2mm stuff. Which makes them VERY RIGID and incredibly difficult to break or fold, even using 2 hands! We have customers ordering fill-in numbers that purchased their 3.5mm Cartonplast set 10 years ago. We like to say that "you'll lose then before you break them". And given they don't cost all that much more than the 2mm version we make, we think this is our best solution if you want the best balance of lower cost but still very reusable.

Because we do all of our own production, and nothing is outsourced, we are able to produce to create and ship and order IMMEDIATELY if need be.
